PERRYTON, TX – Ochiltree General Hospital (OGH) is proud to announce that Michelle Garcia, RN, Clinical Supervisor at Hospice of OGH, has officially received the Charley Wasson Hospice Advocate Award. This high-level honor is presented annually by the Texas New Mexico Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (TXNMHPCO) to a select few individuals who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to the hospice mission.

The award is highly competitive, with no more than four individuals across both states chosen each year. Nominees must have at least three years of service and show a unique approach to patient care and professional development.

Sandra Burton, OGH Long Term Care Director, submitted the nomination, citing Michelle’s ability to go far beyond her administrative duties.

“Michelle has exemplified the very spirit of hospice care—leading with compassion, advocating tirelessly for patients and families, and inspiring colleagues through unwavering dedication,” Burton shared in the nomination. “Colleagues describe her as ‘the heart of our hospice,’ a leader who listens deeply, acts decisively, and never loses sight of the dignity of those we serve.”

During her time with Hospice of OGH, Michelle has been instrumental in:

  • Enhancing Patient Care: Spearheading new pain management protocols and integrating holistic support for emotional and spiritual needs.
  • Community Outreach: Leading initiatives to ensure local families are aware of and can access compassionate end-of-life services.
  • Mentorship: Personally guiding new nurses through the emotional complexities unique to hospice work.

“Whether it is a late-night visit or simply holding a hand in silence, families often share how Michelle’s presence brought them comfort during their most difficult moments,” added Burton.

The TXNMHPCO Charley Wasson Hospice Advocate Award winners represent the "gold standard" of palliative care. The OGH family invites the community to join them in celebrating Michelle’s nomination and her continued impact on the health and hearts of the Texas Panhandle.
